A Soxhlet apparatus is a piece of laboratory equipment used to extract lipids and other substances from a solid sample. Soxhlet extraction is used when the desired compound is insoluble in the solvent, and only a small amount can be extracted.
The Soxhlet apparatus consists of a glass tube with a thimble-shaped bottom that fits into a flask containing the solid material to be extracted. The tube is filled with the solvent, and the apparatus is placed in a water bath. As the water bath heats up, the solvent evaporates and condenses on the cooler glass walls of the tube. This condensed solvent then drips down into the thimble, where it comes into contact with the solid material.
The compound being extracted will dissolve in the solvent and be carried down into the flask with each cycle of condensed solvent. After several cycles, enough of the compound will have been extracted from the solid and present in solution form in the flask.
